Walt Disney World Sports in Orlando-Disney World

26 12 2008

Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex is proof that Disney doesn’t do anything unless it does it in a big way. The huge complex contains a 7,500-seat baseball stadium — housed in a giant stucco structure that from the outside looks like a Moroccan palace — a 5,000-seat field house, and a number of fan-oriented commercial ventures such as the Official All-Star Cafe and shops that sell clothing and other items sanctioned by Major League Baseball, the NBA, and the NFL. During spring training, the perennially great Atlanta Braves play here, and the minor-league Orlando Rays have games during the regular season. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The complex hosts all manner of individual and team competitions, including big-ticket tennis tournaments. In all, some 30 spectator sports are represented among the annual events presented, including Harlem Globetrotters basketball games, baseball fantasy camps held in conjunction with the Braves at the beginning of spring training each year, and track events ranging from the Walt Disney World Marathon to dozens of annual Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) championships. The complex has softball, basketball, and other games for group events ranging from family reunions to corporate picnics. Osceola Pkwy. 407/828-3267 events information. www.disneyworldsports.com.
